Barriers to Housing

Share this:

Imagine you are trying to move out of temporary housing and into an apartment of your own with your two children. You submitted 15 applications to various listings, and all have denied you. You have a stable job, an excellent credit score, and references. What are you missing? A clean criminal record.

You have prostitution convictions on your record due to being trafficked in the sex trade. Despite getting out of your trafficking experience years ago, your criminal record still presents barriers to your independence. You are reminded of this past trauma each time an apartment application is denied. Now, you must decide between disclosing your trafficking experience to your future landlord in the hope that they will excuse your record or giving up the opportunity to leave the temporary shelter.
